Texas Rep. Ted Poe wants the General Services Administration officials to pay the public back for their expensive Las Vegas conference.
In 2010, the GSA spent more than $800,000 on the 300-person Western Regions Conference, Poe said in an address to the House of Representatives on Wednesday. The “taxpayer-funded high-dollar boondoggle” included a $31,000 reception, glamorous parties, food, wine, posh suites, giveaways and entertainment.
The conservative Republican from Humble criticized the “bureaucrats-gone-wild” for betraying the American taxpayers and mishandling their money.
“This kind of lavish spending is exactly why Americans don’t trust the government with their money,” Poe said.
The GSA posted a video last week, in which Acting Administrator Dan Tangherlini called the occurrence completely unacceptable and announced a top down review of all spending. However, for Poe, this isn’t enough.
The Texas Congressman wants the government officials, “who played poker with the people’s money,” to pay Americans back out of their own pockets.
“Public servants should not be public serpents,” he said.
